Baseball in North Florida is played in genuine heat. August tryouts, September tournaments and June travel weekends routinely run in high temperatures with humidity that makes them feel considerably worse.
Heat illness is among the most preventable serious risks in youth sport — and among the most commonly missed, because the early signs look like a player simply having an off day.

Why Young Players Are More Vulnerable
This is the part most adults get wrong. Children and adolescents are not simply smaller adults when it comes to heat.
- They sweat less efficiently, so they shed heat more slowly.
- They generate more heat relative to body mass during exercise.
- They acclimatize to hot conditions more slowly than adults.
- They are less likely to recognise or report early symptoms.
- They will keep playing through discomfort to avoid coming out.
The practical consequence is that a coach or parent who feels fine may be supervising players who are genuinely struggling.

The single most important distinction is mental status. A player who is confused, speaking oddly or does not know where they are is a medical emergency, not a player who needs a drink.
If you are debating whether it is heat stroke, treat it as heat stroke. Cooling an athlete who did not need it costs nothing.

What to Do
For suspected heat exhaustion, act immediately rather than waiting to see whether it passes.
- Stop activity and move the player into shade or air conditioning.
- Remove equipment — helmet, chest protector, extra layers.
- Cool actively: cold towels to neck, armpits and groin; cold water if available.
- Give cool fluids if the player is fully alert and able to drink.
- Do not send them back into the game that day.
- If mental status changes at all, call emergency services immediately.
Never leave a player showing heat symptoms sitting alone in a dugout. Symptoms can escalate quickly, and someone needs to be watching them.

Prevention: Acclimatization
Gradual exposure is the most effective prevention available, and it is the one most often skipped when a season starts abruptly.

Reading the Heat Index
Temperature alone understates the risk. Humidity is what stops sweat evaporating, and evaporation is how the body actually sheds heat — which is why a humid 90 degrees in Tallahassee is more dangerous than a dry 98 elsewhere.

Florida tournaments in June through September frequently sit in the high or very high bands during afternoon games. That is normal here, which is precisely why it gets treated casually.
Who Is at Higher Risk
