Baseball Stats for Parents: What the Numbers Mean

Baseball produces more numbers than any other sport, and most parents follow exactly one of them: batting average. It happens to be among the least informative.

Here is what the common statistics actually measure, what counts as good, and — importantly — how much attention any of them deserve at youth level.

OPS is the one to follow. It captures getting on base and hitting for power in a single number, and it correlates far better with actually helping a team than batting average does.

Batting average’s weakness is straightforward: it counts a single and a home run the same, and it ignores walks completely. ERA is quoted constantly and is heavily distorted by the defence behind a pitcher. WHIP and walk rate say considerably more about the pitcher themselves — and at youth level, walks are the statistic most worth watching, because command is what develops into effectiveness.

Most youth scoring apps present the same handful of figures. Here is what to look at first.

Checking at-bats first is the habit worth building. A .400 average across 15 at-bats and a .250 across 80 are not comparable measurements, and most youth stat lines sit closer to the former.

The Numbers That Do Matter

Objective physical measurements are far more reliable than performance statistics at this age, because they do not depend on opponents, scorekeepers or luck.

Analysing baseball numbers

Stats Coaches Actually Ask About

If a college coach mentions numbers at all, it is usually a short and specific list.

  • Velocity and pop time for pitchers and catchers — measured, not claimed.
  • Sixty-yard time, because it is comparable across every player.
  • Exit velocity, where a facility has measured it.
  • Strike percentage rather than ERA for pitchers.
  • Level of competition, which reframes every other figure.

Notice that four of the five are measurements rather than game statistics. Coaches trust numbers produced under controlled conditions, which is part of why showcase events exist at all.

Advanced Stats, Briefly

If you follow professional baseball you will encounter these, and they occasionally appear in youth conversations where they do not belong.

  • WAR — total value in one number; needs full-season professional data.
  • wRC+ — offensive production adjusted for park and league, 100 is average.
  • FIP — pitching independent of defence.
  • BABIP — batting average on balls in play; useful for spotting luck.
  • Launch angle — increasingly discussed and frequently misapplied to youth hitters.

How to Use Any of This

Sparingly. The most useful application of statistics at youth level is spotting a trend across months — a strikeout rate falling, a walk rate rising for a pitcher — rather than evaluating a weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does ERA mean in baseball?

Earned run average — earned runs allowed per nine innings pitched, excluding runs that scored because of errors. Lower is better. It is the most commonly quoted pitching statistic and one of the more misleading at youth level.

What is a good OPS?

OPS combines on-base percentage and slugging. At youth level, around .700 is solid, .800 is very good and .900 or above is excellent. It is a better summary of a hitter than batting average.

Why is batting average a poor measure?

It treats a single and a home run identically and ignores walks entirely. A player with a .250 average who walks frequently and hits for power is more valuable than a .300 hitter who does neither.

What is WHIP?

Walks plus hits per inning pitched — how many baserunners a pitcher allows per inning. Around 1.30 is roughly average at professional level; below 1.00 is excellent.

Do youth baseball statistics matter?

Less than parents think. Sample sizes are tiny, scorekeeping is inconsistent, and competition varies enormously. Trends across a season are mildly useful; individual weekend numbers are noise.
